YouTube comments not showing is nearly always a mix of default sort order, moderation filters, disabled sections, or glitches, frustrating if you want to read reactions or confirm your own message posted. Here’s how to check why comments are missing and what practical steps (as a viewer or creator) will get them back, or at least confirm what’s really happening.

Quick diagnosis: symptom, cause, fix

Symptom Likely cause Immediate fix
Comment panel missing or blank Restricted Mode, blockers Turn off Restricted Mode; disable privacy/adblock extensions
“Comments are turned off” banner Uploader, Made for Kids Can’t override, set by creator or required for kids’ content
Posted comment vanishes after submitting Spam/blocked word filter Switch to Newest first; avoid links/repetitive text; check with channel owner
Comment count shows numbers, but feed is empty Glitch or cache issue Hard refresh, update app, try private/incognito window
Older comments load, but your reply is gone Held for review Channel owner must manually approve in YouTube Studio

Viewer fixes: how to see hidden YouTube comments

Stuck as a viewer? Work down this checklist first:

1. Switch sort order from 'Top' to 'Newest first'. YouTube ranks comments by engagement and may suppress those it thinks are low quality or repetitive. As flagged in Lilach Bullock’s guide, switching to “Newest first” will reveal recent comments that the default view hides.

2. Disable Restricted Mode. Restricted Mode blocks all comments across YouTube when enabled. Technobezz’s walkthrough shows how to turn it off:

  • On desktop: Avatar (top right) > 'Restricted Mode' > Off
  • In the app: Profile icon > Settings > General > Restricted Mode off
  • In mobile web: Tap menu or profile, check filters

3. Check for browser extension or cache conflicts. Ad blockers, privacy extensions, or custom script blockers can zap the comment panel. Try an incognito/private window (no extensions loaded), if that works, disable one extension at a time to isolate the culprit.

Invented example: Alex posts a bug report under a coding video. It’s missing from 'Top comments', but switching to 'Newest first' reveals it as expected. No bug, just YouTube hiding the unengaged comment by default.

Creator fixes: missing comments on your uploads?

Running a channel and hearing that viewer comments disappear?

1. Review the ‘Held for review’ tab. YouTube’s automatic moderation holds some comments for review based on spam signals, links, or flagged words. Held items stay invisible until approved, and are deleted after 60 days if ignored. Find them: YouTube Studio > Comments > Held. See CommentShark’s breakdown for limits.

2. Check moderation settings. Under Settings > Community > Defaults, you can set:

  • None: comments go public with no screening
  • Basic: catches spam, promotions
  • Strict: catches more, including some false positives
  • Hold all: requires your manual approval for every comment

If you have a backlog to sort, a structured triage method helps you reply efficiently and skip noise.

3. Inspect blocked words and links. Anything matching your blocked word list or containing a URL will be held (if 'Block links' is active). Check these settings if legit comments keep disappearing.

Still can’t see comments? It might not be fixable

Some problems are out of your hands, including:

  • COPPA / Made for Kids: Comments are always off for content marked 'Made for Kids'. Uploaders can’t change this.
  • Uploader disabled comments: Comments hidden globally for the video or whole channel. Nothing you do will show them.
  • Network enforcement: On school or family-managed networks, Restricted Mode might be locked on by an administrator.
  • YouTube policy removal: Comments that violate guidelines (hate, abuse, spam) are deleted entirely by moderators and never show up, even with the API.

“I need to see comments anyway”, how to view or export them

When you can’t get what you need from the watch page, maybe you want to read a competitor’s audience feedback, or the interface just keeps failing, the YouTube Data API and frontend tools offer a workaround. You won’t bypass privacy settings, but you can:

  • Use the Channel X-Ray YouTube Comment Search to load the 100 most recent top-level comments on any public video, search by text or username, and skip UI glitches or sort order hiding. These are public comments not blocked by creator settings.
  • Export those comments as CSV or JSON for offline research or triage. Each comment is labeled by keyword/theme (e.g., question, content request, pain point, the labels help spot requests or themes faster).

These free tools can’t:

  • Surface comments if the uploader disabled comments entirely (the API returns nothing if comments are off)
  • Show you comments awaiting moderation ('held for review' queue, those are account-private)
  • Fetch more than the 100 most recent top-level comments per video. They don’t pull replies or exhaustive historical archives

Invented scenario: Jordan wants to analyze feedback on a competing product video, but the comment panel never loads in their browser. Pasting the link into the downloader exports the newest comments to a sheet for review. If the video has comments disabled, the tool returns nothing, no workaround exists.

Frequently asked questions: missing YouTube comments

Why are comments not showing on YouTube Shorts? Shorts comments appear in an overlay panel, not beneath the video. If this panel won’t open, check if it’s marked 'Made for Kids' or has comments disabled. Switching platforms (app/desktop) sometimes helps.

Why do I see a comment count but no comments? The count includes all posted comments, not just the visible ones. If nothing displays, likely causes are: Restricted Mode, entries held for review, or a server-side error. Try clearing your cache or using a different device.

Can I read comments on unlisted or private videos? Unlisted videos handle comments the same as public videos (anyone with the link can post and read, including via API tools). Private videos do not display comments to anyone but invited users, and third-party tools cannot retrieve them.

If your goal is audience research rather than just solving a UI bug, look at the comment search and comment downloader for structured, exportable results on public videos. These free tools read what’s actually there, up to the limits of YouTube’s API, not beyond.
