Where tags live
Tags are metadata the uploader types in YouTube Studio. Viewers never see them — they used to sit in the page source, which is why browser extensions could scrape them, and they now come from YouTube's own data. This page reads them directly, so nothing needs installing.
Be honest about what tags do
YouTube's published guidance is that tags play a minimal role in discovery, and matter mostly when a title is easy to misspell. Anyone selling you a tag tool as a ranking hack is selling 2015. What tags are genuinely good for is reading a competitor: the vocabulary a channel picks tells you how it frames its own topic, and where it thinks its audience is coming from.

Plenty of large channels don't bother with them. An empty result usually means the uploader left the field blank, not that anything failed.
